Well, this week's been a bit of an odd one because it started off good, then got awful and now it's good again. So I guess I'll start at the beginning.
Last week, we'd decided that it would be nice to organise a big night out for all of the volunteers at IDEX so we could all relax together and get to know each other a bit more because, even though we all spend every day together, everyone forms little groups so you don't actually have a conversation with every person every day. So on Wednesday, we all went down to one of our favourite beach bars and I'm pretty sure everyone had an awesome night, even if I can't remember all of the details. They even put on karaoke for us so, as you can imagine, everyone completely embarrassed themselves but it was good fun. After that, things started to go a bit downhill, though.
We're clearly not used to getting drunk in the heat or off of Indian alcohol because we all felt unbelievably rough the next day and I may or may not have had to pull a sicky that morning but I did feel genuinely ill and not just in a hangover kind of way.
Hangovers really aren't good for morale and we all spent the next couple of days in the worst moods ever. Everything about camp was bringing me down. The food was nasty, the staff were just bad and then to top it all off, we got bed bugs so had to change rooms. There's also been a weird atmosphere around camp with drivers disappearing and not coming back and weird arguments going on in Hindi that noone else can understand. It got so bad that at one point we were thinking about just leaving camp later this week and not looking back. We even considered jetting off to Sri Lanka for two weeks. In the end though, Me, Poppy and Mari Anne have decided to take the last week off work and head down to Palolem where we spent last weekend. So no camp seems a lot more bearable when we know we only have about a week left here.
It was one of the nicest meals everrrr and it definitely did the job of cheering us up.
We've mostly spent this weekend at the beach but on Saturday night we went to the Saturday Night Market at Arpora and it was incredible. It was better than the market we went to the other week at Anjuna because it was much more chilled out and it wasn't all the same identical Indian tat that we seem to get sold everywhere we go. We got some really good food there too and we even ate chicken. From a street vendor and so far, with no bad side effects.
Tonight we're going out to say goodbye to Emily so that will suck to say goodbye, yet again but I'm sure we can drown our sorrows pretty well in some butter chicken and cheese garlic naan.
Delhi Belly update: My stomach's not been a very happy bunny since wednesday's night out but it's not stopping me from doing anything so I'm just going to let it do it's own thing for a little while.
Homesick update: Because it's been a bit of a weird week, I've been missing home a lot more and would just like to go home for about an hour and then come back. Just to stop sweating and to feel clean for a little while but I still definitely wouldn't class myself as 'homesick'
