When I first tell people about what I'm planning on doing in TWENTY days time, I tend to get asked a lot of questions about what I'm doing/who I'm going with etc so I thought I'd do a quick blog post of FAQs. So, here goes...
Ok, so where exactly are you jetting off to?
I'm spending 8 weeks in Goa, then I've got 10 days to travel around India for a bit, then I'm flying to Bangkok to explore South East Asia.
What are you doing in Goa for all that time?
I'm volunteering at a children's centre, which is where Mums bring their children for the day when they can't quite look after them properly. I'll also hopefully be having the time of my life and meeting some amazing people. If all goes to plan :)
Are you going all alone or with friends?
I'm going alone but I've organised my trip through BUNAC who specialise in trips for people going it alone, so it's not as scary as it sounds.
So you don't know anybody else on the trip?
No, but BUNAC are fantastic and have put me in touch with all the other volunteers starting on the same day as me, especially a girl from South Wales, so we've organised to be on all the same flights, so it's not like I'm turning up on the other side of the world, completely surrounded by strangers.
Who are you volunteering for?
I'm volunteering and also staying in accommodation provided by a charity called IDEX. You can find out more about them here: http://www.idex.org/.
Have you had to have loads of injections before you go? *shivers*
I've been to India before so I haven't had to have as many injections as I would have done otherwise. I've had to have one for Hepatitis A, which I got on the NHS but then I also needed vaccinations for Rabies and Hepatitis B which my GP doesn't cover so I've had to fork out a hell of a lot of money for the pleasure of being prodded and poked once a week before I go.
I also still need to decide on what anti-malarials to go for so any advice on that would be fantastic.
Aren't you going to miss home like mad?
Yes. To put it simply. I'm going to miss all my friends and family sosososo much and I know that after about two weeks, or during my first dose of Delhi belly, I'm just going to want a cuddle from Mummy. I also know that curry for every meal of every day for 8 weeks will get old very quickly and I'll probably want to sell a limb for a brew and a bacon sandwich.
BUT, I'm determined to not let any of this take away or distract from how AWESOME it's going to be.
So how are you feeling? Excited? Nervous? Like you want to throw up?
If I'm honest, a bit of both. I've been looking forward to this trip for 2 years so absolutely cannot wait to get stuck in, but, I am nervous, like I think anyone would be because I'm going to be completely out of my comfort zone. The whole 'wanting to throw up' feeling comes from the fact that I've had glandular fever for 3 months which has messed up my ears, making me feel dizzy and queasy if I move around too much without medication, so the 9 hour plane ride could be interesting, as I've got a feeling the change in pressure on take-off and landing could really screw me over but there's no point worrying about things like that which you can't control. Overall though, I know that this is going to be an amazing experience and I have a feeling it's going to go by way too quickly for my liking.
